Wood not wasted in SW Shed
At least two men's sheds have stocked up on wood supplies for future projects thanks to Cristal Mining.
Leschenault Men's Shed and Dalyellup Men's Shed took advantage of the offer through the Australind titanium plant's recycling program.
The company finished building a road in Dardanup and had 20 cubic metres of spare timber and jarrah from trees in the area.
Cristal environmental superintendent Peter Allen said recycling the wood was the more sustainable option.
"The aim of our recycling program is to reduce, reuse or recycle any wastes that we may have," he said.
"It's better off to use this wood than burn it, particularly if the community can get something out of it.
"The great thing is that whatever the guys make, it's going back into the community, making it a community venture."
Cristal Mining has a sponsorship committee that Mr Allen said regularly "reached out" to the community in such situations.
He said the company also covered the cost of milling the wood.
Leschenault Men's Shed member Bevan Forster said his group was always looking for more wood for projects.
"We usually work with a lot of pine wood, so jarrah is a real luxury for us," he said.
Mr Forster said the timber would "be put to great use" for items such as furniture that were needed by pensioners and community groups, with the men previously having made tables out of wood for events such as the Chefs' Long Table Lunch or to display as art at Bunbury Regional Art Galleries.
