Bunbury's business community got a lesson in leadership and the importance of regional sport on Friday when West Coast Eagles legend John Worsfold spoke at a luncheon.

The Bunbury Chamber of Commerce and Industries and the Department of Sport and Recreation presented Worsfold to the business community at the Lighthouse Beach Resort, where he captivated an audience for two hours.

The two-time AFL premiership captain and 2006 premiership coach spoke a lot about the value of sport in the community.

“So much I have learnt from my involvement in sport relates to the way you live your life, your values and community values,” he said.

“Within my industry of the AFL I have been a captain or coach of West Coast for 20 years so I have had a lot of leadership experience, good and bad all the way through. Now is the opportunity for me to pass that on.”

Worsfold played for the Eagles for 11 years and 209 games and coached the club from 2002 to 2013, including two Grand Finals.

The 46-year-old said regional sport was crucial to the community.

“It’s where you make social networks, friendships and children learn a lot from being a part of an organisation,” he said.

“Succeeding in sport is having everyone on the same page, everyone in the team being clear about what we’re all there to do, so communicating that is really important — that’s exactly the same in business.”
