Yarn-bombing shows pride in true colours

Bunbury Senior High School’s Student Services was bombed with a yarn exhibition on Thursday and Friday, in celebration of Pride Week.

Student Services manager Kelly Anderson said the school wanted to do something special for Pride Week, a week that celebrates and raises awareness of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans-gender and intersex community.

‘‘We wanted to have a language focus, targeting definitions, stereotyping and derogatory names,’’Ms Anderson said.

‘‘Homophobic bullying leads to a higher rate of suicide in lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, trans-gender and inter-sex youth.’’

The yarn-bombing exhibition was set up outside the school student services on Thursday and Friday.

‘‘We had so many students and staff come over to have alook,’’Ms Anderson said.

The exhibition featured works by youth in the local True Colours support group, a not-for-profit organisation that works to make sure the needs of the lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, trans-gender and intersex community are met.

‘‘It’s a non-permanent form of graffiti, and it links with Pride Week through its use of colour,’’ Ms Anderson said.

‘‘We were promoting diversity through the colour and the wool.’’

Ms Anderson said the school had already started to think about next year’s exhibition.

‘‘Hopefully we can bring more schools in the district in to it,’’ she said.
