Registration fees reduced

Classic car owners who are members of a Department of Transport approved motoring club could save significant sums of money each year thanks to a new government scheme.

Concessions for Classics will significantly reduce the costs of running a vintage car in WA by slashing licensing fees on classic cars by 75 per cent.

South West Veteran Car Club president Barry Gartrell is confident this scheme will have a flow-on effect in the motoring industry.

“The scheme will encourage more owners with modified vehicles to have them licensed for road use,” Mr Gartrell said.

“The reduction in licensing fees will encourage more people to buy a classic vehicle or register their existing vehicles and use them for club events and limited private use.

“I can see there being an increase in club memberships and people out enjoying their vehicles at events and socialising with like-minded people.”

The vehicles can be driven for a maximum of 90 days per year, made up of 60 days participating in approved motoring club sanctioned events and 30 days for personal use including testing, maintenance and repair.

To be eligible, vehicles must have a gross vehicle mass under 4500kg, be a street rod as defined in the National Guidelines for the Construction and Modification of Street Rods in Australia, or a car or motorcycle made before 1990.

Approved vehicles can’t be used for hire and reward purposes and will be required to display an approved identifier.
