Backyard blitz for cop who gives all

WA police officers rallied behind a sick workmate with a busy bee at his Bunbury home while he was in hospital earlier this month.

South West District Inspector Kim Hutchinson was diagnosed with throat cancer at the end of 2014 and has daily chemotherapy sessions.

Moving into their new house in Bunbury about the same time he was diagnosed, Insp. Hutchinson and his wife, Maggie, have been unable to finish their front garden.

Officers from across the State met at Insp. Hutchinson's home on March 5 to put in reticulation and lawn.

South West District Inspector Geoff Stewart said it was the least they could do for someone who did plenty for the community.

"Hutchy has done so much for families everywhere and now the police family are doing this for him," he said.

Insp. Hutchinson and his wife have been foster parents during their time in Broome, Perth and Bunbury.

The policeman of 44 years was also a director on the Police Legacy Board, which helps families of sick, injured or deceased police officers.

Mrs Hutchinson said the support from her husband's workmates had been incredible.

"When I look around at all the people here it's just so overwhelming," said a grateful Mrs Hutchinson.

"Looking after Kim, and then doing things like the washing and other household jobs, I was finding it hard to find the time to get out and water the garden."
