BDCA CRICKET: Marist v Leschenault
Saturday was a day for the youth in the LGM Industries Bunbury and Districts Cricket Association.
Rangy Marist youngsters Brayden Clarke and Harry Creasey took centre stage against Leschenault and while the youngsters excelled, the honours went to the giant killing Green Caps.
Leschenault defended 9-167 to win by nine runs, the first time they have defeated Marist away.
Teenager Creasey took man-of-the-match with 3-16 off eight overs, followed by top scoring with 29 runs, towards Marist's 158. Colleague Clarke drew comment from regular grand final umpire Brendan Kelly for a superb spell of spin bowling with what Kelly described as "one of the best deliveries I have seen in my years of major league" when he bowled Tom Buchanan with a brilliant wrong-un.
Marist lost their second successive match to slip to second last on the BDCA points table ahead of bye team Dalyellup Beach.
Seven Green Caps worked their way into double figures with wicketkeeper Matt Buchanan (40) the only batsman to pass 20 in their score of 9-167.
Missing three top men, Mat Foreman, Matt Anderson and Paul Reynolds, the Blues battled gamely on a grassy pitch as Kurt D'Agostino, 3-28, Luke Slater and Nicholas Webb kept them under wraps. Like Leschenault, six Marist batsmen managed double figures with only Creasey passing 20 in the low scoring match.
At Hay Park it was another blitz on home soil following Grant Milbanke's massacre of Marist last week for the champions to increase their lead at the top of the points table with a six-wicket slaughter of Collie.
With Shaun Towers taking 3-14 off seven overs, and Milbanke, Ross Knoll and Chris Waddingham all taking two wickets the Coalminers sputtered to a miserly 203 runs with only Luke Abbott passing 20.
The Redbacks' top order set it up thanks to Hay Park president Steve Florance, Oliver Westbury - who made a blistering 52 with seven boundaries - and a six by Knoll snapping up two bonus points to stretch their lead on the table.
