Crooked Brook Brigade get new HQ

Aaron Corlett, BUNBURY HERALDBunbury Herald

Members of the Joshua/Crooked Brook Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade are delighted to have a new home.

Collie-Preston MLA Mick Murray and Department of Fire and Emergency Services deputy commissioner Lloyd Bailey opened the Joshua/Crooked Brook Fire Shed on November 6.

Dardanup shire president Mick Bennett said it took about three years for the shed to be built from the planning phase.

"I think it is excellent for the brigade to have its own shed and the opening was well timed with the fire season upon us," he said.

Joshua/Crooked Brook Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade fire control officer Lynton Gillies said there were some objections to building the shed near Dardanup, but he believed it would benefit the community.

"The underlying issue was that the best way to fight bushfires is if you can get there quickly and that is the hope for the new shed," he said.

"I think the shed is positioned well because it is located in the centre of our district near some hilly terrain."

Mr Gillies said the shed would pull the Crooked Brook community together and allow the brigade to hold meetings and training sessions.

"Previously we were located at a shed on a nearby farm," he said.

"We were leasing it until the property was sold but the Dardanup Shire Council and Department of Fire and Emergency Services have done a lot of work to help us.

"Tom Cross from Picton Civil helped out a lot and the members of the brigade did a few busy bees to help out around the site."
