A driver has been rushed to hospital with critical injuries after his car plunged off a bridge in Collie.

Police responded to reports the car had gone through the railing of the Schultz Bridge on Collie-Preston Road, near Skipworth Road, about 11.30am on Thursday.

The driver was pulled from the water and rushed to Collie Hospital in a critical condition.

There was visible damage to the corner of one of the guard rails on the bridge.

The vehicle had significant damage to it as it lay in the dried river bed while police continued their investigation.

Police have warned motorists to avoid the area, with the Collie Preston Road, near the Collie River, closed in both directions.

Early reports suggested two people were in the car, but police have since confirmed the driver was the sole occupant.

More to come.
