Esther has the write stuff

A Bunbury student has beaten her peers from across the State and secured a prestigious creative writing scholarship.

Bunbury Senior High School Year 11 student Esther La'Brooy-McIver was awarded the Roy Grace Scholarship, which entitles her to $1000 this year and another $2000 next year subject to continued academic performance.

Only one student receives the scholarship each year after an extensive judging process.

Esther submitted a number of pieces, including one poem she had written for a school assessment, to the competition while in Year 10 last year.

She was formally presented with her certificate by Education Department executive director Lindsay Hale at the school last week.

Esther admitted she was "ecstatic" to have won but had no expectations, especially as she views maths and science as her strongest subjects.

"I was pretty proud and have always been a bit of a creative writer," she said.

"My teacher said to give it a go but I expected nothing of it."

She noted common themes of oppression with the pieces she had written and described herself as being passionate about reducing the stigma around mental health.

She also hoped to continue her writing with the view to being published in the future.
