Lane guides home $31 Caulfield winner
Bunbury jockey Damian Lane caused a major upset at Caulfield on Saturday when he guided outside chance Flamberge home in the $500,000 Oakleigh Plate (1100m).
The Peter Moody-trained six-year-old gelding, who was a $31 long-shot on the tote, held off the fast finishing Fell Swoop ($13) by a short half head to claim Group 1 honours.
The victory is the second Group 1 triumph of Lane's career, with the hoop also snaring the $400,000 Sir Rupert Clarke Charity Cup (1400m) on board Trust In A Gust in 2014.
It was also the second Group 1 triumph of Flamberge's career, after the gelding won the $500,000 Darley Goodward (1200m) with Vlad Duric in the saddle at Morphettville last year.
In Saturday's race, Flamberge faced the difficult task of overcoming a wide barrier draw after jumping from gate 15 and also carrying the top-weight 58kg.
Lane placed Flamberge in an ideal position 200m out from the post and the six-year-old stormed home to chase down emerging sprinter Heatherly and hold off a diving attempt from Fell Swoop.
Lane also snared a dominant win on board rising three-year-old filly Catch A Fire in the $200,000 Polytrack Angus Armanasco Stakes (1400m) in the third race of the Caulfield card on Saturday.
It was only the second time Lane had ridden Catch A Fire, with the duo also claiming victory on the first occasion.
Lane has been in scintillating form since he returned to Australia after three months in Hong Kong in 2015.
The hoop, who is now based in Melbourne, has ridden 104 winners since February 28 last year.
Meanwhile, Myalup-based trainer Justin Warwick claimed a trainers' double at Ascot on Saturday.
WA's leading jockey William Pike teamed up with the Warwick-trained Uncle George to claim the second race of the card, while young gun Jake Casey guided Ready To Fire home in the seventh.
