Police are on the hunt for a scam artist who nearly swindled thousands of dollars from an elderly woman in an elaborate trick.

The scam unfolded when the victim, a woman in her 80s, received a phone call from a Melbourne phone number with the caller claiming they were from the National Australia Bank security office on February 5.

She was advised to withdraw money to the value of $10,000 USD, with the caller stating the cash would assist in the apprehension of scammers.

The male caller provided the victim with a collection location and password with details to confirm the money was given to the correct person.

Detectives remain investigating the scam and have released images of a man who they believe may be able to assist with the investigation.

He is about 170 cm tall — five foot seven inches — and has a full beard.
