Phoenix fumes over draw

Lincoln Bertelli, BUNBURY HERALDBunbury Herald

South West Phoenix was left heartbroken on Saturday after a last-gasp goal from Swan United secured a 1-1 draw in the Football West State League Division One match at Payne Park.

The goal followed an extended period of dominance for the visitors, but left Phoenix fuming at the amount of added time allowed by the referee.

After the goal, Phoenix barely had time to kick off again before full-time was called.

Swan could have found the net earlier had it not been for an excellent one-on-one save by Jamie Oakey and a strong South West defensive line, which continually caught Swan's attackers offside.

The home side enjoyed control for stages of the first half and was finally rewarded as winger Jayden Prosser headed the ball across goals for sharpshooter Lee Stewart to head home the game's opener.

Phoenix had chances in both halves to extend the lead but struggled to find the fluency to kill the game off. The dropped points keep Phoenix at fifth on the table, five points behind the league leaders.

Captain Ryan Risdon, who missed Saturday's match on suspension, was available for the club's big FFA Cup preliminary round quarter-final at Sorrento yesterday afternoon.
