The department responsible for prescribed burning in the South West is warning residents to expect more smoke as it takes advantage of "favourable" weather conditions.

It comes as Bunbury and surrounding areas were blanketed in smoke at the weekend.

Department of Parks and Wildlife South West regional manager Bob Hagan said the department would gradually move its "burning footprint" around the region.

He said prescribed burning near Collie, Yabberup and east of Kirup, along with drift smoke from the Warren region contributed to the weekend's lingering smoke.

"We do try and plan so the smoke doesn't climb over main roads and into communities," he said.
