Students, parents "Give a Damn"

Students in Greater Bunbury did the region proud with their efforts last month for the Rotary Club of Bunbury Leschenault's fundraiser "Give a Damn, Give a Can".

The fundraiser ran throughout May, with schools donating a range of non-perishable goods for the Salvation Army, St Vincent de Paul and Bunbury Intown Centre.

Give a Damn, Give a Can schools coordinator Vic Puzey was proud to say this year's haul was the biggest yet and more than double last year's with more than 10,000 items donated.

"We had a marvellous year with the schools," Mr Puzey said.

Last year's standout school Kingston Primary donated 1600 items to the cause and the massive effort was almost doubled this year with 3000 items.

"We went to the school with a trailer and four-wheel-drive and had to deliver it all before going to the other schools," Mr Puzey said.

"They have done a magnificent job."

Kingston Primary School Give a Damn, Give a Can coordinator Hannah Doulton said there had been a chain reaction from the students throughout the community.

"We do a class verse class competition so they really get into the spirit of it," Ms Doulton said.

"The parents get even more excited and then through word of mouth the community catches on and we get members of the community donating."

"It's a really good community feel out here, everyone has been very generous."
