Waterfront vision a big win for boaties

A grand vision for Bunbury's waterfront that includes better public facilities and more boat pens will be unveiled on Thursday night.

The Transforming Bunbury Waterfront Committee has spent more than a year working on a plan for the development of Casuarina Boat Harbour and Koombana Bay.

The public will be invited to give feedback at the official unveiling of the plan in the Harvey Room of Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre from 6pm on Thursday.

Committee chairman and Bunbury MLA John Castrilli said the plan took into account feedback received in a series of community consultation meetings.

Mr Castrilli was tight-lipped on what the plan would include.

But he confirmed a key feature was better berthing facilities in response to the growing demand for boat pens.

"What we are trying to do is look at Bunbury and a vision for what Bunbury could be," he said.

"Obviously, what we want to create out there and be able to deliver is a modern facility, a brand-new industry and a place where people can recreate and live.

"It will fit in with the changing landscape of Bunbury over the next 10, 20, 30 years."

The South West Development Commission has taken the role of coordinating the plan and has worked with several organisations - including the Southern Ports Authority, which manages the Bunbury Port.

Commission chief executive officer Don Punch said the plan was the result of years of planning and extensive public consultation.

"We are grateful for the ideas and feedback received from local people throughout this process and look forward to hearing what you think of the vision that will be unveiled," he said.

"What will be presented isn't the end product and any feedback received will be considered when shaping the final vision for transforming Bunbury into a thriving marine centre that's also a vibrant recreational and tourist destination".
