Shadow treasurer Angus Taylor won’t rule out running for the Liberals’ top job if Peter Dutton loses on Saturday as he prepares to release the costings of his party’s election promises.

While Mr Taylor — who, as a senior Liberal member, is one possible contender for Liberal leadership — said his main aim was treasurer, he refused to rule out making a play at the head position.

He was sharply Sky News on Monday if he would put his hand up for Opposition leader if the party loses on Saturday.

“You know, there is one job I want ... and that’s Jim Chalmers’ job because he’s not up to it,” Mr Taylor responded.

“He’s out of his depth, he’s out of touch. We can do better.

“We need someone with a private sector background who understands business, who understands investment, who understands what it is to grow a growing economy.

“Jim Chalmers doesn’t understand any of that because he’s a doctor of spin, not a doctor of economics.”

Mr Taylor said voters could expect to see “a stronger budget position than Labor’s” from the Coalition’s election policy costings in the next few days.

“It will be a stronger position, make no mistake about it,” he said.

“That is what Australian’s need right now if they’re going to have a stronger household budget.

“What’s very clear from the costings that came out is that the real risk to our economy is Labor, the real risk to our government budget is Lbbor, the real risk to our household budgets is Labor and we also learnt today that the real risk to our credit rating is Labor.”
