Ferry trips on the Swan to receive $60m boost from Federal Government for Roger Cook’s expansion plans

Ferry commutes across the Swan River will become easier with the Federal Government adding $60 million to Roger Cook’s plans to expand water transport services. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will give $50 million to build the new ferry terminals at Applecross near the Canning Bridge bus interchange, and at the University of Western Australia. Another $10 million will go towards planning and designing stage two of the ferry network extension, contemplating potential new stops in key locations such as Maylands, Point Fraser, Burswood, Optus Stadium, Claisebrook, Belmont and Rivervale. “Perth is a beautiful city and it makes sense to better utilise the iconic Swan River for public transport,” Mr Albanese said. “This is a win for commuters, a win for tourists and a win for local jobs.” The Federal funding pledge builds on a promise Mr Cook made during the State election earlier in the year. Member for Perth Patrick Gorman said it was another step in the strong partnership between the two governments. “This is a ‘ferry’ exciting day for the people of Perth,” he said. The State Government has put out a tender to build five ferries locally for the new system. Mr Cook said the partnership with the Commonwealth would “help bring our vision for the Swan River and the future of public transport in WA to life”. “Our plan to build ferries locally is another example of how my government is working to diversify our economy for the future by creating quality jobs and making more things here,” he said. “We will never stop working towards ensuring all Western Australians have access to the infrastructure and services that we need.”
