Danielle Laidley’s grand final ratings: Brisbane run red hot as few Sydney players can hold their head high

A perfect 10 in a grand final and some sorry Swans reading as AFL expert Danielle Laidley gives her verdict on every Brisbane and Sydney player’s grand final performance. BRISBANE 1. Will Ashcroft: 10 All class from the Norm Smith Medallist. He was very clean around the contest and stoppages and provided great link-up between the arcs. A very special performance including 30 disposals at 87 percent, five clearances, 434 metres gained, six inside 50’s, 11 score involvements and a ripping snap goal from stoppage. 2. Lachie Neale: 9 Stifled by James Rowbottom in the first quarter. Sydney changed tag to Hugh McCluggage, then Neale took over to be dominant and take the game away from Sydney in the second and third quarters. A game-high 34 disposals and nine clearances showed his class. 3. Callum Ah Chee: 9 Had a huge impact on the game, kicking four goals, with 11 score involvements and six inside-50s. Demoralised Nick Blakey. 4. Kai Lohmann: 9 Arrived on the big stage when the game was on the line. Kicked three goals in the first half and four for the game, along seven score involvements and four tackles. 5. Josh Dunkley: 8 Put Isaac Heeney to sleep and kept him under pressure for the whole game with 12 huge tackles. He then amassed 21 touches and had seven score involvements. 6. Brandon Starcevich: 8 Didn’t give Tom Papley a sniff after his first snap goal, defending him very closely, and went on to have a team-high eight intercepts possessions. This was crucial for his team. 7. Jarrod Berry: 8 Stamped his authority on the game early and was a key driver for the Lions. His decision-making with the ball on the wing was first class with his 20 disposals. 8. Hugh McCluggage: 8 Best-on-ground in the first quarter. His ball use and influence was superb. James Jordon tagged him after quarter-time, which allowed Ashcroft and Neale to takeover. 9. Harris Andrews: 8 Was hot early in the game with intercepts and rebound-50s. Really stood tall. Luke Parker was sent to him, but he kept his cool to play on Logan McDonald who had no influence on the game. 10. Dayne Zorko: 7 Was quiet early when tagged by Jordon in the first quarter. Once the tag was released, he got into rhythm, producing 26 touches and 455 metres gained. 11. Joe Daniher: 7 We witnessed the full box of chocolates with Joe. He kicked 2.4 for the game, was instrumental in the ruck with four clearances of his own, but perhaps his biggest highlight was his chase and rundown tackle on Errol Gulden in the second half. 12. Darcy Wilmot: 7 Chased, tackled and intercepted five times. Showed courage putting his head over the ball in the contest and finished with 15 touches at 80 percent. 13. Jack Payne: 7 Completely blanketed Amartey all game in a strong defensive effort. 14. Jaspa Fletcher: 7 Terrific role on the wing, used his legs as a vital cog in transitioning the ball for his team. Had 18 possessions and 425 metres gained. 15. Noah Answerth: 7 Used his smarts to spread wide in defence to rebound the ball from defensive 50. Finished with 14 touches at 87 percent, which were very important. 16. Ryan Lester: 7 Took 11 marks for the game, in an important role of controlling the ball across half back. Stood tall all year with many injuries to Brisbane defenders. 17. Zac Bailey: 7 Played a very important role in Brisbane’s first-half blitz. Won 17 disposals and used the ball well with two important goal assists. 18. Logan Morris: 6 Came into the game when the Lions stamped their authority, Kicked 2.1 and took six marks. Was subbed late to give Connor Mckenna his taste on grand final day. 19. Charlie Cameron: 6 A ball of energy early and played with intensity, laying some big tackles. He missed opportunities in front of goal and could have used the ball better at times. Kicked a great set shot goal and had six score involvements. 20. Cameron Rayner: 6 Had no impact when the game was up for grabs, particularly in the first quarter. Got going when Brisbane were running hot, amassing 16 possessions and a goal. 21 .Eric Hipwood: 6 One of the quieter forwards linking the play, but played his role with seven score involvements and a second-quarter goal that will be shown for a long time. 22. Darcy Fort: 6 Didn’t let his coach and team down. Made a real contest in the ruck and with his follow-ups. Pushed forward to take a strong mark, only to kick a point. 23. Conor McKenna: 4 Came on as sub with 10 minutes to go. Another Irish premiership player. SYDNEY 1. James Rowbottom: 7 The Swans’ best, played with intensity and never gave in. Was charged with looking after Neale in the first quarter, had 19 possessions and 10 bullocking clearances along with hitting the scoreboard with a goal. He can be proud. 2. Robbie Fox: 7 Held up across the game, won 21 touches with a kicking efficiency of 100 percent and his 10 contested possessions showed great intent. 3. Luke Parker: 6 He was given the role to get to Andrews in the first half, but poor ball delivery didn’t help him. He went into the midfield in the second half to try and stop the bleeding. Had six tackles and kicked three goals late. Can hold his head high for intent and work-rate. 4. James Jordon: 6 Did his job on the day. Quelled Zorko’s run and carry in the first quarter, then moved onto McCluggage where he dulled his influence after a cracking start. 5. Lewis Melican: 6 Had six intercepts and tried to rebound offensively, but it all became too much in the end. 6. Brodie Grundy: 6 Failed to take what was thought to be a huge advantage in the ruck against Fort. Did have seven clearances of his own, but wasn’t enough. Was able to gather plenty of touches around the ground, but only three marks. 7. Ollie Florent: 5 Had 24 touches and five score involvements. Was solid on the day and one of the better ball-users for the Swans. 8. Chad Warner: 5 Collected 21 touches and 656 metres gained, but his ball use was well below par at 52 percent. Was one of the Swans who tried hard to have an impact. 9. Errol Gulden: 5 His 24 disposals looks impressive, but only eight were when the game demanded more of him. Very sloppy defending of Ashcroft for a forward-50 stoppage goal. Not good enough. 10. Matt Roberts: 4 Struggled with the talented Brisbane small forwards, but did provide some offensive from the backline and used the ball well at times. 11. Harry Cunningham: 3 Struggled with Cameron’s intensity early. Fought back into the contest as game went on. 12. Dane Rampe: 3 Had many opponents over the course of the game. Wasn’t his resolute self in defence, losing one-on-one contests. 13. Nick Blakey: 3 Provided his usual run and carry with 491 metres gained, but you must defend on the big stage or you get caught out. Was responsible for at least six Brisbane goals. 14. Jake Lloyd: 3 Had 19 touches, but went missing when the Lions were rampaging. 15. Tom McCartin: 3 Was well beaten by Daniher, then wasn’t able to provide any offence for the game, having only seven disposals. 16. Hayden Mclean: 3 Apart from one goal assist, he was completely dominated by Brisbane defenders and had no influence in the ruck. 17. Isaac Heeney: 3 Absolutely clamped by Dunkley. Had 14 disposals for the game at a horrific disposal efficiency of 43 percent. Always under pressure. 18. Justin McInerney: 3 Offered no run and carry from his 10 touches. Seemed to get caught in no-man’s-land on the wing. 19. Will Hayward: 3 Whoever picked him for first goal would be happy, but that was it for the day. 20. Tom Papley: 3 A class touch and snap for a goal in the first quarter, but then no impact, completely dominated by Starcevich. 21. Joel Amartey: 2 Absolute shocker. Goalless, no tackles, no influence. 22. Braden Campbell: 2 Started as the sub and came onto ground for Logan McDonald. Three possessions and four tackles was acceptable when all was lost. 23.
