Motormouth Mitch: Why Harley Reid needs to pick the brains of dual Brownlow medallist Patrick Cripps

Reid’s Next Move On the Brownlow Medal red carpet West Coast star Harley Reid said he’d spend the next few weeks following his girlfriend Yas Duursma as she plays her AFL season for Carlton. While the West Coast young gun is spending so much time around Ikon Park he should link up with recently crowned dual Brownlow medallist Patrick Cripps for a coffee at the least. The young gun would be wise to spend his time at least picking the brain of Cripps if he gets the chance and even better, try to get in some training with the Carlton skipper. Reid is a similar type of player to Cripps in that they’re both big-bodied midfielders who power out of the contest and can hit the scoreboard. If Reid wants to reach the heights of a Cripps, he should go directly to the man himself for tips on the best way to become the next superstar of the AFL. There is no doubt Reid is going to be better off after his first full pre-season at the Eagles this summer. He will be able to run out games stronger with an improved level of fitness and after an incredible first 20 matches in the colours it will undoubtedly be a sight to behold. But to have an impact like Cripps, he might need a similar training regime as the Northampton product who has seemingly perfected his craft. Cripps’ secrets might unlock the best of Reid years before it’s expected, and this could only help West Coast rise up the ladder as soon as next year. Whether that’s how to build strength in certain areas or how to make sure your weaknesses aren’t exploited. We’ve seen it with Nick Daicos at Collingwood, who was able to become a genuine top 10 midfielder in only his second season (2023). And while that may be lofty expectations on Reid, it could be possible for him to replicate the feat. Top Four Farce We now have sufficient evidence to say there is a lot less of an advantage to fit in the top four than there once was because of the pre-finals bye. And it should either be scrapped all together or pushed back to a pre-grand final bye. There is no doubt that Brisbane deserved to win a premiership, but since the pre-finals bye was introduced in 2016 we’ve seen two premiers from outside of the top four. And we’ve also seen two other teams make the grand final from outside of the top four in Greater Western Sydney (2019) and the Western Bulldogs (2021). Sydney coach John Longmire admitted it wasn’t as good for his team as it once was when asked about it after the thumping at the hands of the Lions. “I’m not going to put it down to that, but it’s not the advantage it once was,” Longmire said. These are amazing, fairytale stories in September that make finals footy amazing, but it’s also shown that while you get a double chance for finishing in the top four it’s not as good as it once was. Both Brisbane and Sydney were banged up leading into the decider, but the Lions looked a lot more game hardened because they’d played enough footy. Sydney looks sluggish, especially after half-time because they had only played two games of footy in the previous 36 days leading into the decider. Moving the bye to the week before the grand final will allow the top-four advantage to be restored. It will also allow the AFL to host a series of events in that week to fill in the space. Every player can attend the Brownlow Medal because those who are interstate and are in the grand final can attend instead of staying at home to get ready. We won’t have an awkward situation where last year’s winner Lachie Neale wasn’t there to present the medal to Cripps. The All-Australian night can be a bigger spectacle as can the rising star and all the other awards. More player interviews can be done in the week so that the footballer can concentrate on the game in the final few days. And maybe even most importantly, if a player gets a concussion in the preliminary final they’re a chance to play under the 12-day minimum rule. Normally the AFL isn’t afraid of change, this should be on their agenda. McInerney Delight Oscar McInerney has set the new standard for how to act when you are the heartbreak story of a premiership. The Brisbane ruckman was never going to play in the decider after dislocating his shoulder twice in the preliminary final. Instead of moping around feeling sorry for himself, McInerney put on not only a brave face but an incredible smile. He was positive, putting all his energy into doing whatever he could do to help the Lions claim a premiership. The scenes as the final siren went or when his replacement Darcy Fort earned his premiership medallion, it was incredibly positive and would no doubt have inspired this team throughout the week and going forward. He knew he’d done his job of getting them to the grand final and they just needed to do the rest. McInerney is a true teammate. Privately there would likely have been heartache and maybe a few tears, but he didn’t let his disappointment divert or take away from the biggest week of his teammates’ lives. “You know straight away once it comes out – she’s not meant to come out. I knew she was done (for) the next week,” McInerney said after the win. “But the club’s built on that brotherhood… we’ve got hard-luck stories everywhere. “I got a bit of the carry-on, but I’m thinking about all the boys (who didn’t play), because it takes a squad to do this.” I am not a fan of giving a premiership medallion out for every player in a squad after a grand final, but if anyone deserves one it is probably the “Big O”. I wonder how much of a motivating factor McInerney’s disappointment will drive Brisbane next year, given not only did he miss out, but he made it with a dignity and selflessness we have rarely seen. Neil’s Next Move Fremantle must find a way to get Neil Erasmus into their best 22 next year. The 20-year-old put together a fine season at Peel Thunder including winning the Simpson Medal in their premiership victory. In 17 games, Erasmus averaged 28 touches and won the Tuckey Medal as the Thunder’s fairest and best this weekend as a result. Erasmus is too good to not be in their side most weeks and while he is right now not at risk of leaving, he is uncontracted at the end of next year and if he doesn’t add to his 23 games, he might look for opportunity elsewhere. Of the four games he played this year Erasmus was sub in three but he’s not the kind of explosive player who can have an impact in that role. Erasmus is more of a grinder who works hard across the ground and needs a lot of time to accumulate to get the best out of himself. Fremantle may have to use Nat Fyfe as that impact sub to open a spot in the midfield for Erasmus going forward. Fyfe is the kind of player who can turn a game in 10 minutes which might be his best role going forward. The dual Brownlow medallist has put his body through a lot in his incredible career and finishing with a flag would be a great way to end it. Erasmus in the midfield and Fyfe as the sub in 2025 might be the best formula to get the outcome. Regardless, Fremantle must find a way to play Erasmus more or risk losing him to a rival club that can provide him with more opportunities.
