Patrick Dangerfield: Geelong Cats star and AFLPA president launches bizarre social media rant
Geelong champion Patrick Dangerfield has launched a bizarre social media rant over the length of quarters in the AFL.
Dangerfield, the president of the AFL Players Association, has called for games at the top level to be shortened on the back of a similar discussion in the NBA.
But his calls have widely been met with bemusement by fans online, who hit back at the Brownlow medallist.
The Geelong captain claims the game needs to be shorter because the public has a reduced attention span and believes demand for the game will increase if there is less of it.
“As audiences attention span reduces the debate will continue with the AFL quarter lengths. It’s Time to reduce them. - cue outrage,” he posted with a swearing emoji.
“Now I’ve heard the ‘record ratings attendance’ argument. Less game less pay BLA BLA BLA. It’s simple Supply and demand. Reduce the supply and the demand goes up.
“Sponsors and salary follow. NBA has an oversupply. NFL have nailed the supply and demand and I’m not sure we have.”
In response, X user Davo posted: “Don’t change what isn’t broken”.
“So if the game reduces by say 20% will you take a 20% pay cut for it? Wouldn’t have thought so,” X user Hayden posed.
After creating the online storm — with most responders disagreeing with Dangerfield’s take — the veteran made an even stranger follow-up post.
“It’s clear everyone agrees the game is far too long and must be reduced. Finally something we can all agree on,” he said.
Dangerfield — who is also embarking on a career in media — is among the most active players on social media, but hadn’t posted to his X account since November.
The 34-year-old is one four player representatives on the AFLPA board, alongside Collingwood skipper Darcy Moore, Hawthorn defender Sam Frost and Carlton ruckman Marc Pittonet.
