A-League Women: Perth Glory coach Stephen Peters and forward Megan Wynne refusing to quit on finals dream

It appears unlikely, but Perth Glory will fight to the bitter end in their pursuit of an unlikely A-League Women’s finals berth despite the odds being stacked against them. Perth will need to win both of their final two games, starting with Sydney FC at Allianz Stadium on Saturday and hope other results go their way if they are to scramble into the top six. They are five points adrift of sixth-placed Canberra entering the weekend and coming off the back of a defeat to them, but Wynne said they were determined to end their season on a high note — with or without a finals berth. Anything can happen in football, stranger things have happened,” she said. “We’ve just got to focus on finishing as strong as we can and letting other results kind of happen and see what happens from there. “The initial reaction, straight from the (Canberra) game, was very disappointed, and we feel like we didn’t give the best account of ourselves. “We had a couple of days off and we came back in and everyone regrouped, and it’s been a positive vibe.” The last time Glory finished above Sydney on the ladder was 2017 and with the Sky Blues sitting level on points with them, Perth coach Stephen Peters said finals aside, there was plenty of motivation to get three points. “This week’s an easy one to get up for, because it’s Sydney FC, they’ve got a fantastic history in the competition,” he said. “We’re playing in a big stadium (Allianz), we’re on the same points, there’s lots of things there we can get motivated for. It’s an easy one, motivationally speaking.” Despite Sydney’s poor season by their lofty standards, Peters said they would not underestimate them, particularly off the back of their three wins on the bounce. “Any team that has taken them lightly has probably paid the paid the price for that. They’ve still got a very good team and a lot of those players have won various trophies for the club, and their recent form has been very good as well. “They’ve won a few games in a row, and there’s a bit more of a renewed confidence there, but we’re not going there to help that. We want to go there and show what we’re capable of doing. “We want to really chase that elusive first away win of the season; it’s the last one, so it’s our last chance to do that.”
