The Perth Scorchers have tasted their first defeat of the season with an eight-wicket loss to the Hobart Hurricanes.

Here are our hits and misses.

HITS

1. Owen owns the game

Hurricanes opener Mitchell Owen stole the show with his maiden BBL ton to steer his side to their first win over a star-studded Scorchers outfit.

The 23-year-old opened the batting alongside Caleb Jewel in the absence of Matthew Wade who remained in the squad despite a calf injury.

The unlikely hero’s knock consisted of nine boundaries and five sixes, including one shot that went out of the stadium as he raced past his previous best of 28.

Owen feasted on and punished Perth’s fast bowlers - which begs the question should they have started with spin?

2. Inglis returns

Australian squad member Josh Inglis returned to the Scorchers for his first match of the season and was powering his way to his fifth BBL 50 when a mix up saw him run out for 49.

The test hopeful punched the ground in frustration over the dismissal which occurred when he was sent back by skipper Ashton Turner in a run mix up.

Inglis had made the most of the short boundary with a 58 run partnership with Keaton Jennings and kept the score board ticking over after the English international was caught for 35.

3. Classy catches

Hurricanes bowler Billy Stanlake claimed the scalp of young Scorchers star Cooper Connolly with a clutch catch in the field.

Connolly top scored in the season opener against the Stars and was gearing up for another big night with three boundaries in a row when he top edged a ball sending it straight up in the air.

Stanlake managed to sprint back and catch the ball in the crook of his elbow while going to ground leaving keeper Ben McDermott stunned.

It was the first of three classy fielding efforts with Hobart skipper Nathan Ellis taking two important catches to dismiss both Jennings and Turner.

MISSES

1. Finn falls again

De ja vu for New Zealand opener Finn Allen who was dismissed on the second ball for the second week in a row.

Allen found the boundary off the first ball from Riley Meredith but was sent back to the sheds the very next delivery after an impressive one handed dive from McDermott behind the stumps.

Allen will be hoping to avoid a three peat and won’t have to wait long to redeem himself with just a two day turn around before facing the Renegades at Marvel Stadium.

2. Better with spin?

Scorches will be frustrated they didn’t seize their moments and the start of the second inning was an opportunity that went begging.

After batting on a dry and slow pitch the visitors opted to open with fast bowler Jhye Richardson which had little impact on Hurricanes opener Mitch Owen.

The big man made the most of the pace finding the boundary with ease and was given a get out of jail free card when a Cooper Connolly shout went unchallenged.

While Connolly and Agar both failed to take wickets the change in pace slowed the run rate of Owen who looked uncomfortable while facing the spinners.

3. Morris costly

The ink isn’t even dry on his new two year contract with the Scorchers but Lance Morris failed to fire in an expensive outing.

With veteran AJ Tye left out of the squad the Wild Thing was proved costly and was hit for 39 runs over 3.2 overs for an economy of 11.7.

He failed to make the most of his opportunity in the final over and gave away a free hit in his first ball which put Owen on strike winning the game off an unbeaten 101 from 64 balls.
