BHP Streamer Screamer: Alkimos Pirates’ long-awaited first win ends five years of heartbreak

For Alkimos Pirates Lacrosse Club’s Division Two women, it was less a case of a long time between drinks, and more a case of never having tasted victory.

But after five years without a victory, their long-running losing streak finally came to an end this year.

And further success could be just around the corner, with Pirates’ women’s team in the running to win the BHP Streamer Screamer, after they submitted a clip of their drought-breaking victory.

Joanne Todd said it was also the win, an 8-7 defeat of Bayswater, was also the first since the club’s inception.

Incredibly, the team were trailing 7-4 heading into the final quarter but ran over the top of their opponents with four late goals to secure a breakthrough win.

“One of the girls wasn’t able to play and she’s been there from the beginning and she was in tears, as well as her mum,” she said.

“They rang one of the guys that plays in one the Division Three guys team and he basically rushed down to see it, because we were so close, and he was there to see us when our first game as well.

“The club has grown dramatically, our team consists of ages from 15 to a lady in her 60s.”

Since their first win, fortunes have improved for the Division Two Pirates, as they have gone on to record another two wins and secure two draws with a handful of games still to go in the season.

Last year’s prize was taken home by rising hockey star Brodee Foster for a remarkable, length-of-the-field, one-handed goal from an impossible angle.

Entries are now open, with the final cut-off at 5pm on Tuesday, August 29. The winner will be announced following the conclusion of voting on September 5.
