SWFL 2023: Harvey Bulls and South Bunbury make hard work of victories
An eight-goal haul from Leigh Kohlmann has helped South Bunbury escape the jaws of defeat after an intense contest against Dunsborough Sharks at Hands Oval on Sunday.
The Tigers eventually prevailed 12.8 (80) to 6.5 (41).
It was a battle between former colleagues as Julian Burgess coached against his former assistant Daniel Wiseman for the first time.
In a tight opening quarter, Dunsborough managed to build an early lead with Cal Foster kicking the only goal of the quarter.
Dunsborough continued building momentum as Cameron Dean ran into an open goal during the early stages of the second term.
While Kolhmann finally drew the first blood for the Tigers, the Sharks managed to build a handy lead with goals from Dean and Mack Candy.
Following the main break, South Bunbury returned to the field with a vengeance, keeping the Sharks scoreless for the third quarter although they would not hit the front until the 20-minute mark with Kohlmann’s fourth major of the afternoon.
Kolhmann continued leading the charge up forward during the final quarter, booting four goals to get the Tigers home comfortably.
The Harvey Bulls were put to the test during Sunday’s 56-point win over Eaton at Glen Huon Reserve.
While the final result 15.13 (103) to 7.5 (47) looked impressive on paper for the visitors, for two and a half quarters, it was anything but easy for Mark Pink’s side.
Eaton, who began the season with two heavy defeats against Donnybrook and Busselton, have looked considerably better since the Easter break — and they continued this trend on Sunday.
Despite Bulls ruck Thomas Wood again dominating at stoppages, the home side’s pressure at the coalface was tremendous.
Prior to the clash, Eaton coach Chris Kinninmont spoke to his players about not only reducing turnovers, but honouring our Anzacs through courageous and selfless play. These messages were heeded despite the loss, much to the delight of everyone wearing red and blue.
For the Bulls, Wood, Andrew Haydon — who received the Nola Marino (Anzac) Medal — and electric half-forward Sam Lewis played very well.
On Saturday under lights at the Collie Recreation Ground, Bunbury defeated Collie Eagles 14.8 (92) to 8.5 (53) with superboot Matt Martin kicking five goals for the visitors.
Earlier in the day at VC Mitchell Park, Busselton’s pursuit of a top-two finish continued after they defeated Donnybrook 15.13 (103) to 12.5 (77).
For the majority of this clash, the Magpies’ pressure and willingness to work for each other was a pleasure to watch — along with Zac Pethybridge and Jake Dugan’s dedication in defence.
However to their credit, the Dons refused to wilt, booting six goals in the final term to give the Magpies some food for thought in the dying stages of the contest.
