SWFL women’s: Bunbury survive Harvey-Brunswick-Leschenault scare, Busselton bag biggest win of season

Harvey-Brunswick-Leschenault gave Bunbury’s women’s side a scare, but the Bulldogs had the quality to secure a 40-point victory at Brunswick Oval on Sunday. The game shaped up as a mismatch with the visitors sitting third on the ladder with a percentage of 388.37 and the Lions in ninth with one of just 22.89 but did not play out in that fashion, with the hosts having the lead as late as the starting stages in the third term despite a 7-2 scoring shot disadvantage. But weight of numbers eventually began to tell for the reigning premiers, who showed their quality late to run out 7.10 (52) to 2.0 (12) winners. Saturday saw Busselton register the biggest win of the season, smashing Eaton by 108 points at Bovell Park. The Magpies led by 30 points at the main break and stacked on another 12 goals while holding the Boomers scoreless in the third and fourth terms, with the 17.12 (114) to 1.0 (6) victory besting the 106-point defeat they dished out to Carey Park in round one. Katie-Jayne Grieve led the way with six goals in the win, while Kate Fielding (three goals), Rennie Meadmore and Sienna Thompson (both two) also had big days. Sunday saw Donnybrook claim their first victory of the campaign, beating Collie by 35 points at Collie Recreation Ground. Max Jetta’s side have had to wait for their chance to sing their song with byes in the first two weeks of the season followed by losses to South Bunbury and Dunsborough but they are now on the board after a 6.6 (42) to 1.1 (7) win. Leila Fotu led the way for the Dons with two goals in a best afield performance, while Lara Riley also had a big scoreboard impact with three majors of her own.
