Man told Bunbury Magistrates Court it was ‘ridiculous’ he was kept in custody for ‘pushing someone over’

A man appeared in Bunbury Magistrates Court yesterday via video link from Bunbury Regional Prison and told the court it was “ridiculous” he had been kept in custody. Clinton Peter Kaurin, 45, appeared in court for a trial allocation date over two counts of alleged common assault, one count of alleged unlawful assault to cause bodily harm, and one count of allegedly impeding a person’s breathing via applying pressure to the neck. Mr Kaurin pleaded not guilty and announced he had only “push(ed) someone over”. “All I’ve done is push someone over and I’ve done three months in jail,” he said. “I’ve already done three months for pushing someone over, it’s stupid don’t you think?” Magistrate Tanya Watt told the court the alleged charges had occurred between December 9 and 15 last year, and all happened in Collie against someone he was in a familial relationship with. When Ms Watt read out the charge of “common assault in circumstances of aggravation”, the accused interrupted and said “there was no aggravation”. “I just don’t like people yelling in my face, it’s simple,” Mr Kaurin said. “There’s only one occasion your honour, I don’t know why you’re bringing up all these different dates.” Mr Kaurin then told the court the statement from his mother was not an accurate account of the alleged offending. “Don’t go off my mother’s statement,” he said. “She’s got Alzheimer’s, she doesn’t know what she saw. “Go off my Dad’s statement.” Ms Watt told Mr Kaurin it would be best to seek legal advice given he knows there is evidence about the alleged incident. He then responded by saying he had not been able to “get a hold of any lawyers”. “I’ve been trying to get a hold of her (the lawyer), I can’t get hold of her,” Mr Kaurin said. “This is ridiculous.” Mr Kaurin’s trial is set for May 1.
