A Carey Park couple say the male driver of a Nissan X-Trail who crashed into the front of their home on Sunday evening was lucky he did not kill anyone.

Jeff Mortimore said he and his wife Eileen heard a “hell of a bang” about 6.30pm on Australia Day before finding a four-wheel-drive had been driven into their study.

“We didn’t know what had happened, initially, ” he said.

“If someone had been in the study at the time, they probably wouldn’t be here with us now.”

Police said a 23-year-old male driver had lost control of the car, crashing it into the Wilson Street home.

He was taken to Bunbury Hospital with non-life threatening injuries and has been charged with driving under the influence.

Mrs Mortimore said if the crash had happened half an hour later she would have been in the study.

“He was lucky we were watching the tennis and not on the computer, ” she said.

Mrs Mortimore said the pair was without power until midnight on Sunday and emergency services had helped secure the damaged parts of the house.

“We are thankful to the people who helped, the police, fire and emergency crews, ” she said.
