SWFL Round 17 Wrap Up

RILEY STUARTBunbury Herald

The Eaton Boomers tuned up for the finals with a 29-point victory over Augusta-Margaret River at a wet and wild Gloucester Park on Saturday night.

The Boomers dictated terms after quarter time and used the ball well despite atrocious conditions to claim a 9.13 (67) to 5.8 (38) triumph.

Chris Atthowe and Michael Battaglia both starred for the visitors and finished the game with three goals each.

The loss did not cause the Hawks to slip from third place however, after the Collie Eagles (fourth) and Bunbury (fifth) both suffered upset defeats.

Collie went down to last-placed Harvey-Brunswick-Leschenault by five points in a thriller on Saturday afternoon, while the Harvey Bulls outlasted the Bulldogs by one straight kick on Sunday.

The Lions led all night and were well served by Jamal Mulholland and Ashley Thornton in the narrow 9.3 (57) to 7.10 (52) win at the Collie Recreation Ground.

Collie booted the final two goals of the game but ran out of time.

Meanwhile, Bunbury's three-match winning streak was snapped after the Bulls claimed a gutsy 12.7 (79) to 10.13 (73).

The Bulls came from 15 points behind early in the last term to kick the last four goals and snatch a win.

Greg Sanders kicked six for the Bulls while Mark Cherubino turned in a best-on-ground performance.

South Bunbury outclassed Busselton 17.9 (111) to 6.11 (47) at Hands Oval on Sunday.

Leigh Kohlmann kicked eight majors for the Tigers, who held the visitors goalless until the shadows of half-time.

At VC Mitchell Park, Donnybrook added to Carey Park's late-season pain, running over the Panthers 16.9 (105) to 10.10 (70) on Sunday.

Ryan Blount booted five goals for the Dons while Jeff Smith dominated the ruck knocks in a best-on-ground performance.

The results have set up a delicately poised final round, with several scenarios possible.

Busselton (sixth) can still make the top five if they defeat Collie (fourth) at Sir Stewart Bovell Park and Bunbury (fifth) lose to Donnybrook (seventh).

The battle for third spot is intense, with the Hawks holding it on percentage from the Eagles ahead of the final round of fixtures.

Augusta-Margaret River travel to play Carey Park (eighth) on Sunday. A win would likely be enough for the Hawks to seal a double chance in the finals.

But if results go their way, Bunbury and Collie are both within striking distance of the third spot.
